How I looked fine on the outside — while quietly falling apart inside
Where I come from, depression isn’t taken seriously. It’s brushed off, misunderstood, or seen as something that happens to “other people.”
If you’re still showing up, smiling, working hard… you must be fine.
I wasn’t.
I was one of the top performers at work. I looked like I had it all together. But inside, I was unraveling. When I finally asked for help, I was handed a quick phone call with a counselor. It didn’t even scratch the surface. So I quit, just so I could breathe, heal, and figure out how to keep going.
“Behind every smile, there’s a bitter sadness that no one can ever see or feel.” ~ Tupac
Even my doctor missed it. I showed up at least twice a month with fevers, body aches, and fatigue. Some days the tests found something, some days they didn’t. Either way, I was sent home with antibiotics. I wish he had looked beyond the physical because none of it was just physical. And that’s one of the biggest problems with mental health struggles that aren’t visible.
But high-functioning depression (HFD) doesn’t play by those rules.
With HFD, you can still:
But what people don’t see is the cost — the quiet exhaustion, the private breakdowns, the emptiness that lingers when the applause fades.
I’d put on makeup, walk into work, give killer presentations, then cry in the bathroom or collapse in bed afterward. That’s HFD.
When depression lingers, even the tiniest tasks (getting out of bed, brushing your teeth, eating something, etc) can feel like moving mountains. But as impossible as it seems, small steps really do matter. I’ve seen this firsthand in my fitness journey, which I shared in “Struggling to Stay Fit? 5 Simple Tips That Helped Me.” The lesson was simple: little actions, repeated with patience, create change. And the same truth holds when you’re trying to find light in the middle of depression
It’s why stories of “the happiest” dancer, comedian, or executive who died by suicide–jumping off the roof of his highrise office building–shock the world. They seemed fine… more than fine, even. That’s high-functioning depression, the kind that hides in plain sight.
The symptoms are similar; sadness, hopelessness, exhaustion, even suicidal thoughts.
The difference?
That’s also what makes it so dangerous. It can last for years, slowly chipping away at you while everyone around you thinks you’re thriving.
But no one walks around with “I’m depressed” written on their forehead. And too often, the people who seem the strongest are the ones who need help the most.
We need to start taking depression seriously — all forms of it.
Workplaces and doctors should not just treat symptoms but listen as well.
We must create spaces where people feel safe enough to speak up without being dismissed.
And as a society, we need to get better at spotting it, so we can respond with empathy, not judgment.
Because sometimes, the people who look like they’re holding it all together are the ones fighting the hardest battles inside.
